ENVIS exists to facilitate the process of sustainable development by disseminating solutions, promoting good practices and strengthening democratic practices through a mechanism of information exchange between NGOs, government and research organisations, business establishments and civil society at large.
The programme is funded by ICEF. The project is being implemented by the Environmental Information System (ENVIS) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (India). ENVIS is the Asia's subregional node of the UNEP's INFOTERRA environmental system. The ENVIS Secretariat started functioning formally since 1st January 2002.

ENVIS Sub-component aims to emerge as a one-stop access point for information and resources on sustainable development and a platform for fostering debates and discussions, highlighting developmental issues and advocating concerned environmental actions at all levels.
ENVIS Sub-component works in collaboration with government and non-government bodies, research and business establishments, development networks and resource person on a wide ranging issues related to sustainable development from agriculture to health to global warming and third world debt, providing information, research supports and facilitating advocacy efforts.
ENVIS Sub-component possesses advanced technologies which include HP 9000 servers, 64 kbps dedicated internet connectivity, Pentium II computers with multimedia kit, scanners and digital cameras. It makes extensive use of these technologies in its everyday functioning.

Gateway to Information on Sustainable Development (http://sdnp.delhi.nic.in)
ENVIS Sub-component has initiated a website on a gamut of issues relating to sustainable development.
The website
hosted from the web-server at ENVIS Secretariat is an information highway which provides updates on latest
sustainable development issues, insights on national and international debates on sustainable development and access to on-line databases.
Developments Today
An initiative of ENVIS Sub-component to keep track of contemporary issues concerning sustainable development through
scanning of dailies, national and international websites, journals, newsletters etc. and sending them
to users everyday in the form of an email digest. Over 30 sources of information are scanned everyday to compile the
"Developments Today" digest.

Query Desk Service
The Query Desk Service (QDS) exists to
serve individuals and development
organisations worldwide in their efforts towards sustainable
development and improving the quality of lives of the people.
Dev-Online
Dev-Online is a pioneering concept to let
organisations and individuals
put research papers, publications,
conference proceedings, databases, etc. on-line
on the
ENVIS Sub-component website for free. You can send us your material to be hosted over the e-mail, fax or through
postal mail and we will put it on our website under the relevant section.
Once it is
hosted it can be accessed by anyone from anywhere in the
in the world.

Web-Space to Developmental Organisations and Networks
ENVIS Sub-component , in its endeavour to create an information highway on developmental issues provides
free web - space on its servers to give a catalytic start to organisations and networks working in
the area of sustainable development to have their own website to have a wider
presence in the development arena.

Event Reporting Service (ERS)
ENVIS Sub-component has initiated for hire reporting
service "Development Watch" for events
pertainining to the environment and
sustainable development, such as conferences, workshops, symposia or regional meetings. ENVIS Sub-component would highlight the outcomes of these important initiatives and makes them widely available through professional, objective and immediate coverage as well as dissemination of reports to both conference participants and target groups worldwide through electronic mails and via the ENVIS Sub-component portal website.

Training on Information and Communication Technologies
ENVIS Sub-component provides training to government, non-government, research and academic organisations on harnessing the potential of Information and Communication Technologies to take forward issues concerning sustainable development at a more macro level. This include training on setting up communication infrastructure and protocols, efficient sourcing and handling of information and creating interactive processes to enrich the information content.
