ENVIS exists to facilitate the process of sustainable development by disseminating solutions, promoting good practices and strengthening democratic practices through a mechanism of information exchange between NGOs, government and research organisations, business establishments and civil society at large.

The programme is funded by ICEF. The project is being implemented by the Environmental Information System (ENVIS) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (India). ENVIS is the Asia's subregional node of the UNEP's INFOTERRA environmental system. The ENVIS Secretariat started functioning formally since 1st January 2002.

ENVIS Sub-component aims to emerge as a one-stop access point for information and resources on sustainable development and a platform for fostering debates and discussions, highlighting developmental issues and advocating concerned environmental actions at all levels.

ENVIS Sub-component works in collaboration with government and non-government bodies, research and business establishments, development networks and resource person on a wide ranging issues related to sustainable development from agriculture to health to global warming and third world debt, providing information, research supports and facilitating advocacy efforts.

ENVIS Sub-component possesses advanced technologies which include HP 9000 servers, 64 kbps dedicated internet connectivity, Pentium II computers with multimedia kit, scanners and digital cameras. It makes extensive use of these technologies in its everyday functioning.
